Saturday morning, five of our members attended a mental health seminar with Travis Howze at Spooky Nook Sports Center in Lancaster hosted by Rheems Fire Department. The seminar, focused on Post Traumatic Purpose, is a mental health movement designed to create awareness by shedding the light of transparency into the epidemic that plagues our military, first responders, health care workers and family members at the professional and personal levels. Spouses and family members are highly encouraged to attend - two spouses of our members attended. Years ago mental health awareness was not dealt with the way it is today; many times you were told just to "suck it up and get over it", now mental health is on the front burner and is the root of many problems facing emergency service workers. Today, it is "ok, to not be ok". As emergency service workers, we see things that people should never see in their lives - unfortunately, for us, it is part of the job; also part of the job is making sure our members receive attention to their mental health and have a method to reach out when they need to talk. We are very fortunate in Cumberland County to have several options available to us in order to receive the care that we deserve. |
