Thank for your interest in the Live-In Program at the New Kingstown Fire Company. The New Kingstown Fire Company is located Silver Spring Township, 20 minutes from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s State Capital. Our Company one of the busiest in Cumberland County and responds to a variety of calls for service in the community.
Our Station received a multi-million-dollar renovation in 2010 which allowed for the creation of a firefighter live-in program. The program is designed for firefighters to use the station as their full-time residence while attending college or being gainfully employed and provide staffing for our combination paid/volunteer fire company to maintain a quick response to incidents. We employ a paid driver/operator 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In exchange for free living accommodations, live in firefighters are responsible for various station duties, training, emergency and non-emergency calls and participation in fund raising events.
The volunteers at New Kingstown respond to over 700 Fire and Rescue incidents per year. New Kingstown provides contracted Fire and Rescue services to Silver Spring and Middlesex Townships and twelve (12) miles of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. We respond to several surrounding municipalities as mutual aid.
As part of a Fall 2023 renovation, provisions were made for eight (8) live-in firefighters and driver's suite in private rooms using the second floor of the fire station. A second laundry room was included as well as four (4) restrooms with showers. This renovation increased our live-in capacity to eight (8)!
An additional overflow bunk room can accommodate nine (9) firefighters. The fire station is complete with a full kitchen and lounge, washer and dryers, wireless internet and more including an in-house fitness room.
New Kingstown Fire Company participates in bi-weekly evening and daytime in house training at company level and encourages state certified training classes through Harrisburg Area Community College’s (HACC) Fire Training Program. These classes are paid for through the fire company. The fire company also participates in multi-company training exercises on a quarterly basis. Rapid Intervention Training is also encouraged as we respond as "RIT" to several municipalities including the Borough of Carlisle.
New Kingstown is located with only a short commute to several area colleges which includes Messiah College, Dickinson College, Harrisburg Area Community College, Shippensburg University, Central Pennsylvania College, Penn State Harrisburg, Temple University Harrisburg, York College of Pennsylvania, and several more.
A few highlights of our live-in program include Personal protective equipment which includes Globe Turnout Gear, Leather Boots, Helmet, and other necessary equipment as well as one set of station wear. A Class "A" Dress uniform is available provided eligibility requirements are met. Workers compensation insurance is provided through Silver Spring Township. The fire company relief association offers additional insurance to each member.
Participation requirements include (but not limited to): full time student or part time work, meet minimum availability/staffing, station duties, and compliance of company SOGs.
Preferred training includes Firefighter I, Vehicle Rescue, Hazardous Materials Operations Level, CPR/AED. Firefighters with previous training and experience will be given the first consideration however anyone interested is encouraged to apply as many classes are available through HACC.
