In 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and declared the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. Created through a joint resolution of Congress that same year, National Police Week honors law enforcement officers who have lost their lives while serving and protecting their communities.
