Hydrant Issue at Gas Leak

By Chief Curtis Hall
March 15, 2023

This evening during a virtual training class at the station for LNG, the company was dispatched first due for a gas leak inside the building in Middlesex Township. Engine and Squad 33 were on the street immediately. Squad 33 reverse layed to the closest hydrant and the crew began to dress it out. While charging the hydrant, the hydrant failed and came apart from the connection to the in-ground riser pipe. Fortunately, there were no injuries to our members (other than just a slight scare). A secondary hydrant had been located in the event it would be needed. The hydrants in Middlesex Township are maintained by their water authority and will be repaired as soon as possible. The gas leak required the entire building to be evacuated until UGI could repair the issue. The incident was traced to a malfunctioning kitchen appliance. Co. 33 was assisted by Union Fire Co and North Middleton Vol Fire Co. Crews were on scene over 1 hour.
